[Pdl-porters] Why 2 typemap files in Basic/Core?

It appears we have two typemap files in
Basic/Core and both seem to be used.
Does someone know or recall why the
duplication?

Same suggestion on these as with the ctypes: would it be a good idea to be bold (Wikipedia-style) and amalgamate and see what happens?
