Discussion:
[Pdl-porters] mailing list relocation to lists.sf.net

The JACH hosting of perldl and pdl-porters mailing
lists is about to end. Our sf.net site supports
mailing lists via the same user interface as we've
been using.

Once I confirm that we can access the archive
mbox files I propose migrating to the lists.sf.net
to avoid interruption of service.

For background, the Joint Astronomy Centre put its telescopes up for sale
and the deadline for that was going to be October 1st. A consortium of
Asian countries will be taking over the telescopes from November 1st and
there was no guarantee that the mailing lists would survive the transition.
Whilst many of the JAC staff are being transitioned to the new owners we
have no way of telling in advance whether the new owners would be happy to
continue operating the mailing lists.

The one downside will be short text ads at the bottom of every list email. But other than that I think it is smart to move them.

While we're at it, does it also make sense to import the pre-2005 archives? We would have in one place complete archives from pdl-porters back to 1997 February and from perldl back to 1996 June, except for about 6 months at the beginning of 2005 which seem to be lost.

New lists @ SF must have the form pdl-***@lists.sourceforge.net. I think "general" would work well for the current perldl list. Could keep the dev list as pdl-porters, or perhaps pdl-devel.

I was about to say that it would be nice to move them to SF to decentralize the admin process (not that the JACH folks have been anything but helpful!) but find I can not get into the pdl-commit Mailman Admin screen because it is administered by tpickering. So there will still be one main admin per list.

You mean like "Sent from my xxxphone"? :-)

Good idea. I would like to see more robust sorting of mailing list
archives available (maybe it could be applied to #pdl as well?)

pdl-general and pdl-devel work for me---if only to avoid confusion
between the orignal list location/host and the current one.

I thought that it was a matter of sf.net permissions granted
and not 1-per-list. Will check...
