I think this is a fabulous idea, and I will gladly support it, but I'm booked enough with other things that I cannot lead such an effort. We would need someone with good organizational skills (who is not necessarily a PDL expert -- yet!) who can organize discussions and the Google application process.
Who will step up?
Who will step up?
Hey all -
Organizations can apply for the Google Summer of Code starting February 3. The application window closes on February 14. Unfortunately, I do not have time at the moment to manage this.
Obviously the PDL3 work is a pretty big project with plenty of small projects that could work for GSoC. However, I am not sure if PDL presents a broad enough organization to compete. I think we should work with other "branches" of the Perl community to put together a pretty good organization for GSoC.
For example, we might consider working with the p5mop and XS communities to help implement the necessary C and XS-level hooks to work with p5mop. Once those are in place, we could begin implementing PDL on top of that object system. I'm sure we could come up with other groups and projects as well, but that seems like it might be broad enough to warrant consideration.
Let's not discuss more ideas yet. First, we need somebody to step up to help organize this. We need somebody who has the time and inclination to reach out to the p5mop and XS communities, and any other groups that might be interested in putting something together. I am more than willing to help, but I can't drive.
Anybody interested?
David
